Police Involved Shooting Reported in Newark's West Ward

Resident's in the area of 14th Avenue and South 16th Street, you are seeing the aftermath, crime scene of an overnight shooting that occurred.

Details are continuing to develop, but this is a shooting that involved a police officer that took place just after 1 a.m.

There were no reported injuries to police officers, but we can't confirm if a person was struck by gunfire or if the suspect was armed with a gun.

Police chased the suspect immediately after the shooting, but it is unclear if the suspect was apprehended.

Resident's in the area told RLS Metro that EMS were on the scene immediately after multiple rounds of gunfire rang out. A large crime scene was established that stretched several blocks up to South Orange Avenue.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is handling the investigation according to a spokesperson for Newark Police.

**UPDATE 9:01 am This is a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office**:

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating an incident in which on-duty Newark Police Officers discharged their weapons in the area of South Orange Avenue and South 16th Street at approximately 1:00 a.m. today.

At this time, no one is in custody, and there have been no reported injuries to civilians or police officers.

As per Attorney General Guidelines, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standard Bureau must respond and investigate when a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon on or off-duty.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
