Three-Alarm Fire Destroys The 'old' Bergen Street School (William H. Brown Academy) in Newark

Firefighters in Newark battled a three-alarm fire that tore through a school in Newark's South Ward early this morning.

The massive fire tore through 709 Bergen Street, The Bergen Street School, at around 11 p.m. sending firefighters to the scene where crews observed heavy fire coming from the roof of the building that sits at the corner of Bergen Street and West Bigelow.

It took firefighters several hours to bring the blaze under control.

The school was renamed to The William H. Brown Academy then closed it's' doors around 2010 sending students to other schools in the district including Arts High School.

It is not immediately clear if the school was currently occupied by another school

The fire was not placed under control before 4 am where heavy fire was still present and the roof of the building collapsed.

There were no injuries reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

UPDATE: 5:55am Under control. Vacant school building.
