There is an investigation underway into the circumstances involving how and why a child was left unattended in Newark on Sunday.
According to authorities, police located the 5-year-old child in the city's North Ward.
Police said, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers responded to Heller Parkway and Clifton Avenue on a call of an unattended child.
The child was transported to University Hospital for evaluation, and its caregiver was ultimately located authorities said.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the child and his 9-year-old sibling were visiting friends when the 5-year-old somehow became separated.
Police said that the child was unharmed and no charges are currently being filed.
Child Protection Services and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office have been notified.
The incident remains under investigation.
