UPDATE: Investigation Underway for Shooting that Killed 10-Year-Old Boy in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a ten year old child was fatally shot earlier today in Newark, NJ.

According Ron authorities, at approximately 1:25 am, Newark police officers were dispatched to a multi-family residence in the 800 block of South 19th Street on reports of a shooting. Arriving units located the victim in the third floor apartment.

The child was suffering an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:48 am, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

At this time, it appears that the child was shot from within the apartment, according to Fennelly.

No arrests, in connection to this shooting, have been made at this time.
