Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which an Irvington resident was struck by two motor vehicles as he attempted to cross South Orange Avenue in Newark on Thursday night.
According to authorities, at approximately 8:10 p.m., the male was struck by a BMW as he attempted to cross South Orange Avenue near South Munn Avenue.
Authorities said seconds after he was struck by the BMW, the pedestrian was also struck by a GMC Yukon.
The pedestrian, who has been identified as **Melvin Thomas, 57,** was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:48 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.​
The matter is being investigated by the Crash and Fire Investigations Unit of the Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Task force.
No charges have been filed at this time, according to Fennelly, who added that the investigation is continuing.
