An Irvington man who attacked a pastor in Newark on Saturday has police investigating.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that members of the Newark Police Division’s Metro Unit arrested Michael R. Healy, 32, of Irvington, for assaulting the
63-year-old pastor yesterday.
According to Director Ambrose, at approximately 7:38 p.m., the pastor was walking near Broad and Court streets when he encountered the suspect.
The suspect struck the pastor after questioning him about religious beliefs Director Ambrose said.
Police quickly responded to the scene and immediately arrested Healy, charging him with simple assault.
Director Ambrose said other charges are pending.
Healy was transported to East Orange General Hospital for psychological evaluation.
The pastor was treated at Beth Israel Hospital for minor injuries according to Director Ambrose.
This charge is merely an accusation.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
