A shooting that happened near a bar in East Orange has police on the scene investigating.
Multiple rounds of gunfire erupted shortly before 2:10 a.m. sending Newark Police to the area of Tremont Avenue and Halsted Street where arriving officers located a male and a female victim shot at that location.
A large EMS emergency response arrived at the Tremont Lounge where a gunman opened fire striking a retired Hudson County Corrections Officer who was reportedly providing security at the bar, and female victim reports said.
Both victims were transported to University Hospital in Newark.
The officer suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was expected to survive.
The female victim suffered a graze injury and was supposed to be ok eyewitnesses told RLS Metro.
According to preliminary reports, several rounds of gunfire rang out and a bullet came through the door of the bar and struck the woman.
It is not clear if the officer returned fire with his weapon.
A dark colored Nissan fled the scene and was last observed on Rt. 1&9 southbound towards Elizabeth according to reports.
East Orange Police is handling the investigation at this time.
**UPDATE 3:33 a.m.** According to Newark Police, A Newark Police Special Officer reported the shooting.
