Camden County Officer Shoots Armed Suspect

Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo reported a police-involved shooting of an armed suspect today.

Camden County Police responded to a 9-1-1 call at approximately 11:31 a.m. from a residence on the 2700 block of Federal Street reporting a domestic violence incident involving a man armed with a gun.

Preliminary findings indicated the officers arrived at the residence and encountered an armed suspect.

The shooting happened as the armed suspect was approaching a female inside the residence. The female victim was injured and was transported to Cooper University Hospital.

The male suspect, who was identified as Jose Antonio Fernandez Ventura, 38, address unknown, was shot by police and also transported to Cooper University Hospital.

The officer, who was not injured, was placed on administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation.

The officer’s identity will not be released at this time.

When a municipal police officer uses deadly force, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office conducts an investigation into the incident, as required by the state Attorney General’s Office guidelines.
