A drug bust in Newark's West Ward had cops take two men into custody this afternoon.
Newark Police reported the arrest of Joseph Brown, 24, of Newark, for possession of CDS and a loaded handgun today.
In response to citizen complaints about drug dealing on West End Avenue, Newark detectives assigned to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force responded to the area and observed a drug transaction between two suspects shortly after noon authorities said.
Detectives arrested the buyer, Vershawn D. Griffin, 46, of Newark, without incident.
He is charged with Possession of CDS heroin.
The seller, Joseph Brown, fled on foot, tossing a 9mm handgun authorities said.
Police said he was chased down and arrested.
Detectives also recovered the tossed handgun, which was loaded with 16 bullets authorities said.
Brown is charged with Possession of CDS, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon with a High-Capacity Magazine, Possession of a Weapon While Engaged in a CDS Offense and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon.
These charges are merely accusations.
Both suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
