Detectives for the NJ State Police are investigating an incident where a person fell from a bridge onto the Garden State Parkway in Nutley causing fatal injuries.
According to a spokesperson for the NJ State Police, the incident happened at around 10:37 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway when a female fell from a bridge and onto the southbound lanes of the highway near mile post 151. 5.
Authorities said that the 15-year-old girls was then struck by vehicle -that was a later identified as a 2010 Mazda 3- and pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy will determine if the girl died from the actual fall or after being struck by the vehicle authorities said.
The driver of the vehicle did not suffer any injuries.
The incident snarled southbound holiday traffic for hours as detectives closed several lanes of the highway to conduct the investigation.
The identity of the girl is being held by authorities until further notice the spokesperson said.
