New Brunswick Man Accused of Burning Child With Lighter in Toms River

Authorities announced the arrest of a 36-year-old man accused of burning a child's face, neck and ear with a lighter.

According to authorities, on Nov. 29th, the Toms River Criminal Investigation Bureau arrested Kareem Hayes, 36, of New Brunswick, after an investigation determined that Hayes purposefully used a lighter to burn the face of a six year old child.

The child, who was under the care of Hayes, suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to the face, neck, and ear.

The incident occurred at a residence in Toms River.

Ocean County Senior Assistant Prosecutor Christine Lento authorized charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Hayes is being held in the Ocean County Jail on $250,000 bail.
