A Newark man who allegedly falsely reported an armed robbery after accidentally shooting himself over the weekend is now facing charges.
According to police, on Saturday, Darron Shivers, 49, of Newark, allegedly shot himself in the leg while driving on State Highway 21 in Newark, but that’s not what he initially told Newark detectives at University Hospital.
Detectives from the New Jersey State Homicide North Unit and Newark Police Department Major Crime Unit began working together at 4:16 a.m. in an attempt to determine how Shivers sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
Investigators were able to determine that he shot himself shortly after exiting the Interchange 14 toll plaza.
The ongoing investigation led detectives from the New Jersey State Police Homicide North Unit, Troop “D” Criminal Investigations Office, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, Homicide North Forensic Squad, and K-9 North Units to conduct a search of Shivers’ Newark residence. Investigators seized a semi-automatic handgun, a revolver, a black powder handgun, two shotguns, and numerous boxes of ammunition. In addition, troopers seized 5.5 pounds of marijuana with packaging material, and small quantities of cocaine and heroin.
Darron Shiver was charged with maintaining a CDS production facility, possession of a weapon during a CDS offense, multiple counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain persons not to have a weapon, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500’ of a public park, receiving stolen property, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, possession of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute within a 1000’ of a school zone, and multiple counts of possession of narcotic paraphernalia.
He was lodged at Essex County Jail in lieu of $500,000 full bail.
Shivers was charged additionally by the Newark Police Department.
The case will be prosecuted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
