UPDATE: Essex Prosecutor Confirms Fatal Shooting of Popular Newark Resident

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a male was fatally shot in Newark, NJ on Monday night.

Authorities said At approximately 10:40 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Bergen Street on a report of an injured person.

Authorities said arriving officers discovered a male in front of a residence at this location.

The male, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The victim has been identified as Eric Bowens, 44, of Newark, according to Fennelly.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
