Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announces the arrest of Najee Lee Odom, 36, of Newark, for possession of a loaded .40 caliber handgun last night.
According to police, members of the Newark Police Special Enforcement Bureau (S.E.B.), patrolling the area of South 11th Street and Springfield Avenue, observed a white 2016 Audi S7 traveling at a high rate of speed at approximately 9:50 p.m.
When detectives conducted a motor vehicle stop, they observed the passenger putting an item in the glove compartment.
As the driver opened the glove compartment to retrieve the vehicle’s documents, detectives observed the handgun.
S.E.B. detectives arrested Najee Lee Odom, the vehicle’s passenger, for unlawful possession of a handgun. He was also charged with certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
“I commend the detectives of the Special Enforcement Bureau for removing an illegal gun from our streets,” said Director Ambrose. “Due to their vigilance in addressing a traffic violation, Newark residents gained an even safer city.”You
