Police in Newark arrested a man who was wanted for a carjacking that occurred in the city's North Ward earlier in the month.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, Cecilio Franqui, 47, of Newark, was taken into custody in connection with a carjacking on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.
Ambrose said, at approximately 1 p.m., a 43-year old female victim parked her car, a gray 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, in the area of Mount Prospect and Verona avenues.
The victim entered a store and upon exiting, found an unknown male in the driver’s seat. When she reached the vehicle and opened the driver’s side door, the suspect sped away and she was knocked to the ground.
Police recovered the vehicle in the area of Branch Brook Place and Montclair Avenue on the day it was stolen. The victim reported that her purse, cell phone, a tablet and cash were among the items stolen along with the car according to Ambrose.
Following an intense investigation, robbery detectives have determined that Cecilio Franqui is a suspect in this carjacking.
He was arrested without incident at the 2nd Precinct, where he reported to for questioning on Thursday, October 27, 2016.
Franqui was then charged with the carjacking Ambrose said.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
