Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Thomas J. Bryan of the Edison Police Department said a township man was charged today with causing a motor vehicle crash that killed a 93-year-old man.
Joseph Petrillo, 20, of Edison was charged with vehicular homicide in the death on July 25, 2016 of 93-year-old Luis Figueroa of Edison.
Bail was set at $35,000 for Petrillo.
He was charged during an investigation by Detective Michael Felcetto of the Edison Police Department and Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
During the investigation it was determined the defendant was traveling north at a high rate of speed on Route 27 near the Peterson Avenue intersection in Edison and was unable to stop before striking the victim’s vehicle.
The victim, who was driving a 1995 BMW sedan, was heading south on Route 27 and was attempting to make a left turn when he was struck by the defendant, who was travelling north in a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck.
The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation is active and is continuing.
