Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announces that the department’s first Citizen/Clergy Academy will begin 6 p.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2016.
The course, to be held at 311 Washington Street, will be held over six weeks and will end with a graduation ceremony. Participants will gain insight into the basic functions and operations of the Police and Fire Divisions as well as the Office of Emergency Management.
The training will include Police Division presentations on crime prevention, gang awareness and domestic violence. It will also offer students a glimpse into “a day-in-the life of a Newark police officer,” as well as outline the operations and structure of the Police Division.
Participants will learn how calls for service are prioritized, the procedures of the dispatch center and how deployment decisions are made.
The Fire Division will offer training on fire escape plans, arson investigations and the proper use of a fire extinguisher. Students will also see demonstrations of the Fire Division’s most intricate and sophisticated equipment.
The Office of Emergency Management will outline the steps it takes when addressing catastrophic emergency situations and will make presentations regarding its most essential equipment.
“The Citizen/Clergy Academy is a great tool for exposing community members to all facets of the Office of Public Safety,” said Director Ambrose.
“The course will allow Newark residents to become active partners in our efforts to eliminate crime, while inviting them into the world of police officers, firefighters and emergency management personnel.”
Anyone interested in participating should contact the Department Community/Clergy Affairs Unit at (973) 877-9552 or (973) 877-9550 or email Detective Febus at FebusD@Ci.Newark.NJ.US. Seating is limited.
