TRAFFIC ALERT NEWARK: Traffic Delays Expected After Sunday's Transformer Explosion in Downtown Newark

Police said on Sunday at approximately 1:30pm, several transformer malfunctioned and caught fire in downtown Newark.

There were no power outages were reported to Newark Police.

PSE&G is currently in the process of replacing or repairing these transformers.

Traffic is expected to be delayed in the downtown area until the transformers are replaced or repaired.

The process is expected to be completed Monday afternoon.

Two of three westbound lanes of Raymond Boulevard near Prospect Street will be closed until the repairs are complete.

A second transformer near the intersection of Broad and Rector Street is also being replaced with morning rush hour traffic expected to be delayed in the immediate area.

Motorist driving near Broad and Rector Streets or Raymond Boulevard and Prospect Street should expect delays and explore alternative routes if possible.

It is likely that all traffic in the downtown area will be impacted, so please allow additional travel time.
