Detectives from the Police Division’ Special Enforcement Bureau arrested 22-year-old Newark resident Kareem Bailey for weapons and drug possession charges yesterday evening announced Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.
Special Enforcement Detectives were patrolling the Vailsburg section of the city in response to citizen complaints about narcotics sales, when they observed Baily engaging in a drug transaction.
Bailey fled but was arrested without further incident after a brief foot chase.
Authorities said in addition to the loaded 25 caliber pistol, Bailey had 49 vials of suspected heroin and 3 vials of suspected crack cocaine in his possession.
Twenty-three dollars in cash was also confiscated as proceeds of drug sales.
The street value of the crack cocaine and heroin exceeds $500.
Director Ambrose commended the dedication and the commitment of the detectives and superiors assigned to this unit whose relentless efforts have removed more than 90 guns from our street since January.
“This group officers truly believe in ensuring the safety our or citizens by getting the guns and the criminals that use them off of our streets.” Ambrose added saying,
“So far this year, shooting are down approximately 20% but more importantly there are 50 less shooting victims.”
Bailey was charged with obstructing the administration of law, resisting arrest by flight, possession of cocaine and heroin, possession of both drugs with the intent to distribute, possession of both drugs within a 1000 feet of Boylan Street School, unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a weapon while committing a CDS offense.
