A 62-year-old Miami man was taken into custody after he was reportedly found in possession of gun at Newark airport Monday.
According to police, a security officer noticed a gun in a passenger's bag as it moved down the conveyor belt inside Terminal A shortly before noon Monday.
Further investigation, led to the seizure of an unloaded .38 Smith & Wesson in a leather holster, found inside the man's bag, police said.
The man - later identified as Thomas L. Goldsmith, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
According to Goldsmith, he was returning home after attending his father's funeral where he obtained some of his dad's belongings. However, claimed he did not know how the gun got into the bag.
Police added that Goldsmith was ultimately found to have a license to carry a concealed weapon in Florida.
He was held on $25,000 bail and is due in court on Oct. 17.
