Newark Police arrested Jeovani J. Lopez, 25, of Newark, on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 for gun possession.
According to police at approximately 2:05 a.m., officers patrolling the area of Summer and Montclair Avenues, observed a vehicle that ran a red light while traveling at a high rate of speed.
Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop and observed Lopez, the driver, place a handgun in the rear of the vehicle. Police secured the loaded handgun and Lopez was arrested without incident police said.
Lopez is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (defaced firearm). He was also issued a motor vehicle summons for failure to observe a traffic signal.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
