Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a male was fatally shot in Newark, NJ on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities said in a press release, at approximately 5:19 p.m., Newark police officers , who were in the area on routine patrol, heard gunshots in the 100 block of South 9th Street..
The officers responded to the location of the shots and observed an unresponsive male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds authorities said.
The victim was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m.
The victim has been identified as **Daquill Grant, age 18, of Union**, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
