Authorities announced the arrest of a 39-year-old Jersey City man accused of stealing two Torahs valued at $30,000 from a city synagogue earlier this week.
On Monday, police were called to the West Side Avenue synagogue after officials reported $70 in petty cash and some apartment furniture missing. The following day, police returned to the synagogue after officials discovered that two Torahs and silver pieces had been stolen.
The ongoing investigation ultimately led to the arrest of Thomas Dobles, who has been charged with burglary and theft.
Police have since recovered the two Torahs valued at $30,000 but continue to search for the $50,000 silver Judaica synagogue, according to officials.
