Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said a Perth Amboy man pleaded guilty today to charges in the fatal stabbing of another city resident.
Wilbert Hernandez, 36, pleaded guilty to a count of murder in the first degree, admitting he fatally stabbed Ramon Lugo, 35, of Perth Amboy on October 14, 2014.
He also pleaded guilty to the charge of certain person not to have a weapon in the fourth degree.
Hernandez will be sentenced to 30 years incarceration in a New Jersey state prison and will not be eligible for parole during the 30 year period for the murder charge.
Additionally, he will be sentenced to 18 months incarceration to run concurrent for the weapons charge.
His sentence is tentatively scheduled for February 3, 2017.
The agreement was reached between the defense and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Lisa Miralles Walsh and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Miriam Acevedo.
Wilbert Hernandez pleaded guilty during a hearing before Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves in New Brunswick.
He was arrested and charged following an intensive investigation by Detective Carlos Rodriguez of the Perth Amboy Police Department and retired Detective Jeffrey Temple of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation determined that the murder was not a random act of violence and that the two men knew each other.
