Two Arrested for Possession of CDS, Weapons in Newark

Newark

Authorities said, NPD1, the City of Newark’s Public Safety helicopter, played a key role in today’s arrest of Michael Griffin, 25, and Bilal Ward, 24, both of Newark.

Police said at approximately 12:30 a.m., NPD1 observed a dark colored vehicle swerving in and out of traffic in the area of Prince Street.

The officer manning the helicopter reported his observations to officers on the ground, who stopped the vehicle on Mercer Street and took both men into custody without further incidence.

The passenger, Griffin, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (marijuana).

Upon further investigation, he was also found to be in possession of a loaded gun with an extended magazine.

Griffin was further charged with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Possession of a High Capacity Magazine, Possession of Hollow Point Ammunition, and Certain Persons Prohibited from Carrying a Weapon. Newark Police confiscated the handgun and CDS.

Ward, the driver, was arrested for Contempt as he was found to have two outstanding warrants from Newark Municipal Court.

He was also issued motor vehicle summonses, including: Unregistered Vehicle, Driving Without a License and Open Alcohol Container in a Motor Vehicle.

Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose stated that NPD1 has been instrumental in assisting officers on the ground in locating suspects that could potentially elude capture.
