Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey said a New Brunswick man was arrested today and charged with convincing a woman to sign the deed to her home over to him and then stealing several thousands of dollars from her checking account.
Fady Chedid, 52, was arrested today on two counts of theft and is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center in North Brunswick in lieu of $50,000 bail.
He was charged during an investigation by Detective Erik Larsen of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
“The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office remains committed to investigating and prosecuting instances of elder fraud, abuse and exploitation.” Prosecutor Carey said.
“By fostering our partnerships with agencies such as Adult Protective Services, we become more effective in protecting those seniors who are vulnerable to these types of crimes. Furthermore, we encourage those who suspect such crimes, to promptly report them to police,” the prosecutor said.
During the investigation it was determined that Chedid convinced the senior citizen to sign over the title to her home and then withdrew several thousands of dollars from her checking account by writing checks in various amounts between September 4, 2013 and June 2014.
The investigation began after an anonymous tip was placed to state authorities at Adult Protective Services of the Division of Family and Children’s Services. A legal guardian assigned by the state subsequently notified the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation is active and is continuing.
