Four-Alarm Fire Tears Through Newark Ironbound Building

According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose approximately 100 firefighters are battling a 4-alarm fire in the Ironbound section of the City with this being the City’s second major fire in less than 24 hours in the city authorities said.

The Newark Fire Division responded to a fire at 12:30 a.m. in the 400 block of South Street.

The blaze, a large warehouse engulfed in flames, was quickly elevated to 4 alarms authorities said.

The size of the fire required mutual aid, with neighboring towns assisting in fighting the fire and manning firehouses.

Acting Fire Chief Richard Gail declared the fire under control at 3:45 a.m. with no injuries to report authorities said.

The Kearny Steel warehouse cleans and stores steel barrels and plastic containers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Arson Unit.

Fire apparatus will remain on the scene for most of the morning putting dousing flames and making sure the fire doesn’t re-erupt. Support at the scene was provided by the Newark Office of Emergency Management and Newark Police Division and remains at the scene.

“The men and women of the Newark fire Department did an exceptional job keeping the fire from spreading to nearby commercial businesses “ Ambrose said.

Officials said South Street from Delancy Street to Jefferson Street will be closed for the morning rush hour.

All motorists shall to utilize alternative routes and consider alternatives, Route 21 or Broad Street.
