A 53-year-old Elmwood Park man was taken into custody this morning after leading police on a chase through several towns.
According to police, sometime around 4 this morning, a Paterson police sergeant saw someone hanging on or out of a car as it drove away near the area of Broadway and Memorial Parkway.
During the pursuit, the suspect caused one Paterson police car to crash into the rear of his vehicle while a second police cruiser rammed into a building on Main Avenue in Passaic.
The pursuit came to an end when suspect - later identified as John Richart - crashed into a highway barrier leading to his arrest.
He was charged with eluding police and possession of drug paraphrenalia as well as DWI and numerous motor vehicle violations, according to police.
The pursuit went through Clifton, Paterson, Lyndhurst, East Rutherford, Secaucus, and North Bergen.
