Two firefighters were transported to an area hospital after a early morning raging fire ripped through a business that had apartments above, then spread to at least two other structures.
Firefighters raced to the 400 block of Avenue C at West 20th Street shortly before 1:30 a.m. after receiving several calls for a fire with possible occupants trapped.
Crews arrived to the scene to find heavy fire coming from 455 Avenue C, a building that house a laundromat and several apartments on the upper levels.
Heavy fire ripped through the roof of the original fire building, then extended to 457, 459, and 461 Avenue C according to reports.
Firefighters fought back ferocious flames while crews were called in for assistance from as far as Belleville.
Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries after a wall collapsed trapping the men.
The fire was officially brought under control at around 4:45 a.m. with no other injuries reported and over 40 residents displaced.
Jersey City, Belleville, Kearny, Hoboken, East Orange and North Hudson Fire Departments were some of the crews on the scene assistance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
