Five people and several dogs have been displaced after a 2-alarm fire ripped through an unoccupied house then spread to their home in the city's West Ward.
Heavy fire broke out inside the unoccupied house located in the 300 block of South 20th Street shortly before 5:30 a.m. sending firefighters so the scene where crews noticed flames coming from the upper floors of the two and a half story house.
About two dozen of Newark's bravest tackled flames that extended from 335 South 20th Street to 333 and 339.
Officials said about five people and five dogs who resided at 339 South 20th Street were displaced. It is not immediately clear how man were displaced from 333 South 20th Street.
A resident of 339 said that this is the 4th fire that has erupted inside the unoccupied house in about two years.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There were no reports of injuries.
