Police responded to the 100 block of Laurita Street on a report of a man sleeping in a resident’s vehicle.
Officers arrived and woke up a 24-year-old Elizabeth man - later identified as Stanley Cenatus - who was asleep in the rear compartment of a Nissan Xterra.
Cenatus told officers that he had been at a party the night before and needed a place to sleep because he had no transportation to get home.
Officers checked his pockets and discovered that he had a driver license of a W. Elm Street resident who had earlier reported a burglary to his residence.
Cenatus also had credit cards which did not belong to him cops said.
Detectives picked up the investigation and charged Cenatus with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property, and possession of motor vehicle master keys.
He was transferred to the Union County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail pending a court date next week.
The investigation is ongoing as detectives are looking to possibly connect Cenatus to other house and car burglaries in the area.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Michael Burnette at 908-474-8535.
