A fast moving fire that erupted inside a house in the city's South Ward had firefighters on the scene late last night.
Heavy fire broke out on the upper floors of a two and a half story house at 216 Hansbury Avenue at around 10 p.m. sending firefighters to the scene where crews observed flames starting to extend to a neighboring house.
Crews were able quickly extinguish flames coming from the attic of the house but not before at least one firefighter was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Newark firefighters also battled a nearby fire that burned in a house at almost the same time of the Hansbury Avenue fire. Crews extinguished a raging house fire that broke out at 29 Hansford Street near Dayton Street. There were no injuries reported.
There have been about six working structure fires in the city in the last 24-hours.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose commended the members of the Department’s Fire Division who have fought 10 fires in the past two days.
According to fire officials, on average, firefighters respond to approximately 10 fires a week.
“We have a dedicated group of firefighters that are willing to go through the extreme measures to help ensure the safety of our residents and their homes.” Said Director Ambrose.”
Fire Chief John Centanni said, “Our firefighting efforts are complicated by the fact we’re battling the intense heat of the fires and the 90 degree temperatures we’ve experienced these past two days.”
The cause of these fires are under investigation by Newark fire officials.
