About 100 educators, parents, and students from around the city took to the picket lines this evening in a demonstration for a fair contract.

According to Jacqui Greadington president of the East Orange Education Association, educators are heading into their third year without a contract.

"The city wants to make this a destination city that's on the rise so it begins with good, dedicated teachers", Greadington said.

The demonstration began at around 5 p.m. and is expected to last until 7 p.m.

A spokesperson for the mayor's office referred all questions to the school district.

"The district is a separate entity and we are referring all questions to their spokesperson".

President Greadington stated that the city has a appointed school board and said that the mayor plays a key role in getting teachers a fair contract.

"This is a mayoral appointed school board that's why we are bringing our voices to City Hall"

Greadington did not release details of pending negotiations.
