Update: Authorities Identify Elizabeth Woman Struck, Killed by Vehicle After Exiting Church Van

The family of a woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Saturday evening told RLS Metro Breaking News that the woman was returning from church and had just exited her church transportation vehicle when she was struck moments later by a vehicle in Elizabeth.

The woman was identified by family as Wanda Cruz, 52, of Elizabeth.

According to authorities, at around 10:36 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of Spring Street and East Grand Street on a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.

Arriving first responders found Cruz unconscious and unresponsive in the roadway according to authorities.

Authorities said Cruz was transported to Trinitas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, as a result of her traumatic injuries, by the Emergency Room staff a short time after arriving.

The driver of the vehicle, Johan Castro-Suarez, of Elizabeth, remained at the scene according to authorities. There were no summonses issued as of this release.

The incident is being investigated by the Elizabeth Police Dept. Traffic Division (908) 558-2068. Assisting in the investigation are the Union County Police Department Fatal Accident Response Team and the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
