Montclair Man Shot Dead in Newark; Total of Three Homicides in the City Since Friday

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday afternoon in Newark, NJ.

According to authorities, shortly after 2:30 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to area of 48 Van Ness Place on a report of a shooting.

Arriving officers observed an unresponsive male inside a vehicle parked along Van Ness Place.

The male, who had apparently been shot, was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The victim has been identified as George R. Allen, III, age 42, of Montclair, NJ, according to Fennelly.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly.
