Three Newark Men Arrested Following Drug Trafficking Investigation

Authorities today announced that three suspects were arraigned today following their arrests on Monday by a law enforcement task force comprised of detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and Bloomfield and Irvington police officers.

​Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that an investigation into drug trafficking in the area of 16th and Fairmount Avenues in Newark culminated with the execution of a search warrant for the Fairmount Deli, located at 66 16th Avenue.

​“At this location, the deli’s manager, Kevin Garnes, 52, and the cousins, Kevin and Hakir Green, both 24, and all residents of Newark, were detained while the store was searched,” Sheriff Fontoura said. “At the deli’s front counter, our detectives seized 18 marijuana-filled plastic bags and in the deli’s storage room 138 heroin-filled glassine envelops, stamped ‘OVERKILL’ in red ink, and an additional 146 grams of marijuana were found secreted above the tiles of a drop ceiling.”

​All three suspects were charged with two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of Camden Street School.

​Garnes and the two Greene cousins were also charged with possession of narcotics paraphernalia and conspiracy to violate New Jersey’s narcotics laws.

​At today’s arraignments, cash bond only bails were imposed on all three suspects: Garnes ($75,000); Kevin Greene ($50,000); and, Hakir Greene ($50,000).

The three suspects were lodged at the Essex County jail.
