DEVELOPING NEWARK NJ: House Fire Kills Woman in Newark's North Ward

A fast moving fire that ignited inside a house fatally injured a woman this afternoon in a tight knit North Ward community authorities said.

According to a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, very little information could be given on a fire that broke out at around 5:15 p.m. in a large two and a half story house located at 12 Oraton Street.

Firefighters were called to the neighborhood on reports of a fire with one person trapped inside.

Arriving crews noticed heavy fire company from the attic apartment of the house where firefighters entered and immediately removed the badly burned woman, according to reports.

The 61-year-old woman - who was not a resident of the home - was transported to an area hospital where she succumb to her injuries a short time later the spokesperson confirmed.

There were no other injuries reported authorities said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

At least nine people were displaced by the blaze.
