Port Authority officials are investigating the cause of a smoke condition that injured a worker aboard a PATH train early this morning. According to a statement from the Port Authority, smoke was reported inside a PATH tunnel at approximately 12:50 a.m.
The incident involved an empty train with no passengers on board.
A PATH employee on the train was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Officials described the injuries as minor and non-life-threatening.
Preliminary findings suggest that a piece of metal may have fallen onto the third rail, sparking a small fire and generating heavy smoke in the tunnel.
Normal PATH service resumed at around 2:40 a.m., and the Port Authority continued investigating the incident.
