Woman Struck by Vehicle Seriously Injured in Newark

Newark New Jersey

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating an incident in which a woman walking a dog on Clifton Avenue near Branch Brook Park was struck by a car that was being pursued by Newark Police.

In addition to the woman, a Mercury Sable, carrying a driver and a passenger, was also struck.

All three were transported to University Hospital. The pedestrian is in serious condition. The two others have non-life threatening injuries.

Consistent with Attorney General guidelines, because the incident involved a police pursuit, it is being investigated by the Professional Standards Bureau of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:47 am today a suspect was being pursued in a gold 2002 Nissan Sentra when the 20-year-old male driver of the vehicle hit a 79-year-old woman.

The investigation is active and ongoing. At this time, no arrests have been made. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
