A woman suffered severe injuries in an early morning crash in Newark's downtown on Monday.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the vicinity of Market Street and University Avenue to investigate reports of a crash with injuries.
When rescue crews arrived, they found a crashed vehicle with a person trapped inside a badly damaged car near the Essex County Welfare Office.
The victim was extricated then rushed to University Hospital for treatment.
It initially appeared that the driver lost control and slammed into a tree, but police are actively investigating the cause of the crash.
There were no other injuries reported from the crash.
