Woman Injured in Newark West Ward High-Rise Apartment Fire

Residents inside a high-rise building in Newark's West Ward were forced to evacuate after a fire started inside an apartment at the building early Sunday morning.

According to a statement released by Newark Police officials, the fire started shortly after 8 a.m. where members of the Newark Fire Division responded to 200 Mount Vernon Place on a fire alarm that activated on the first floor of a high rise residential building.

According to officials, firefighters arrived at the scene and found smoke coming from one of the apartments and swiftly knocked down the small blaze.

Officials say a female victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital in Livingston for treatment.

Newark Firefighters placed the fire under control at 8:21 a.m. according to officials.

The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the Newark Fire Department's Arson Unit.

There were no other injuries reported.
