Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force arrested Shmar Smith, 36, of Newark and seized 2,200 packets of heroin, 64 grams of cocaine, Oxycodone, weapons and various drug paraphernalia during a predawn raid today.
Following an investigation, detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office executed a search warrant at Smith’s Munn Avenue home in the Bradley Court Housing Complex at 6 a.m. today.
They recovered 70 grams (44 bricks) of heroin with an estimated street value of $13,200; 64 grams of cocaine with a street value of approximately $3,200; five Oxycodone tablets worth approximately $100; a loaded M11 9MM assault weapon; a loaded .22 caliber handgun; a black starter pistol; $875 in cash and materials used to package narcotics.
Smith was taken into custody without incident and charged with possession of heroin, cocaine and Oxycodone. She was also charged with possession with intent to distribute the heroin and cocaine; possession within 1,000 feet of a school and within 500 feet of a public housing complex; possession of drug paraphernalia and numerous weapons offenses.
Bail was set at $200,000 by the Honorable Robert H. Gardner, Judge of the Superior Court. Shmar is currently being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
