Winter Storm Knocks Out Power to Newark Hospital, Cancels School; Residents Praise Newark's Cleanup Efforts

Newark

A powerful nor'easter that dumped over a foot of snow on parts of North Jersey caused crippling conditions as fallen trees and power lines caused hazardous conditions for the region.

The March snowstorm ripped through Newark's South Ward causing city and school officials to close schools on Wednesday and Thursday citywide for the cleanup.

Residents in hundreds of Newark neighborhoods took to social media to praise city leaders, police, firefighters, and sanitation technician leaders for professionalism and safety as streets in the city saw plow and salt trucks at least once during the overnight hours.

PSEG officials are trying to determine if a tree that fell in near the intersection of Elizabeth and Renner avenues is the cause of a power outage that affected a large section of the South Ward.

According to Beth Israel Hospital spokesperson Linda Kamateh, at 4:50 p.m. PSE&G experienced an issue with a transformer on Lehigh Avenue that supplies power to parts of the hospital.

Spokesperson Kamateh said during this issue; the hospital lost power causing the emergency generators to activate with no interruption to patient care.

PSE&G restored power to the hospital a short time later.

Newark Board of Education officials initially reported a two-hour delayed opening for the district's staff and students but later reversed to a full day cancellation to allow the Department of Neighborhood Services to further clear Newark streets of snow.
