As the rain clears out of Newark and the North Jersey region, colder air settles in for what appears to be a long stretch of winter weather.
Good Thursday morning! I hope your New Year celebrations were enjoyable.
This morning, temperatures in downtown Newark are holding at 39 degrees, but the real story today is the wind.
Gusts are expected to reach between 40 and 45 mph across the region, making it feel even colder as the day progresses.
Residents stepping outside will need to brace for blustery conditions that will linger throughout the afternoon.
Light flurries have already been spotted in Morris, Sussex, and Passaic counties. However, according to the National Weather Service, these are not expected to amount to much, with no significant accumulation in the forecast.
Later today, a chance of sprinkles and flurries is possible after 1 p.m., but skies will remain partly sunny with temperatures reaching a high near 43.
The wind will stay persistent, with 14 to 21 mph speeds and gusts as strong as 46 mph. As evening approaches, the skies will clear up slightly, but temperatures are set to drop to around 28 degrees.
With wind chill factored in, it will feel like 20 to 25 degrees, reminding everyone that winter is here to stay.
Bundle up, stay warm, and enjoy the day, Jersey!
