Weehawken Shooting Leaves 24-Year-Old Man Dead, Suspect in Custody

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Weehawken Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday evening, August 15, on Park Avenue in Weehawken.

According to Prosecutor Esther Suarez, officers responded shortly after 7 p.m. to reports of gunshots in the area between 37th and 41st Streets.Ad Upon arrival, they discovered 24-year-old Jhonnier Gamboa Acosta suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

Acosta was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:14 p.m.

The exact cause of death is pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

During the initial investigation, police apprehended a suspect, identified as 67-year-old Juan Perez, with the help of Union City and Weehawken officers.  

Perez has been charged with murder and several weapons-related offenses. He is currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.AdProsecutor Suarez praised the collaborative efforts of the Homicide Unit, Weehawken Police Department, and Union City Police Department in the investigation and arrest.
