State Troopers were called to CR 628 in Wantage Township, Sussex County, on Monday, January 22, 2024, at 4:51 p.m., following reports of a shooting. The preliminary investigation led law enforcement to a single-family residence, where they made a harrowing discovery.
Police said Mr. Donald Simpson, a 70-year-old resident of Wantage, was found inside the home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
In a tragic addition, two dogs were also found deceased, each with gunshot injuries.
Simpson was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
In a significant development, Troopers were able to identify and locate the suspect, 34-year-old Daniel Simpson, also a resident of Wantage. He was apprehended without incident.
During their investigation, Troopers also discovered a firearm in the vicinity of the crime scene.
Daniel Simpson now faces grave charges, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
As the investigation continues, authorities have emphasized that this remains an active case.
