“I am grateful that these officers took command of a situation that could have ended in a tragedy,” Director Ambrose said.
“Newark Officers, who are still in field training, likely averted a shooting and may have saved a man’s life. Our neighborhoods are safer thanks to the presence and quick actions of these officers. They each exhibited great restraint and should be commended,” he added.
Just before 8:55 p.m., three Community Focus Team members pulled into the Exxon Gas Station at 397 Springfield Avenue and heard two men arguing loudly. Officers observed one of the men remove a handgun from his person while approaching the man he was arguing with.
The shortened video shows Walker with his hands in the air and no weapon is seen on the captured body cam video sent by Newark Police officials.
Officials say the three officers each unholstered their service weapons and arrested the suspect, Laquan Walker, without incident. No injuries have been reported.
Walker faces charges of unlawful weapon possession and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
These charges are merely accusations. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
