Police in Newark took a suspect into custody and charged him with early morning robberies and a carjacking in Newark's North Ward Friday.
A preliminary investigation indicated that just before 6:42 a.m., police were notified of an armed carjacking in progress in the 400 block of Lake Street.
When officers arrived at the scene, they were informed that a masked male suspect exited a car and ambushed a man while entering his vehicle on Lake Street.
Surveillance video showed that the suspect took the victim's keys at gunpoint then sped away from the scene.
Police caught up with one of the suspects on NJ-21 and placed him in custody after the assailant attempted to run from officers.
The other suspect parked the carjacked Range Rover on High Street in Passaic, where Newark Police arrived with a tow truck to recover the vehicle.
The suspects are wanted for a pattern robbery spree that occurred around Newark just before they targeted the Lake Street resident.
The incident remains under investigation.
