USDA: Ensuring Food Safety at Farmers Markets

New Jersey

By: Richard L. Smith

Farmers markets are a beloved weekly tradition for many, offering a wide range of fresh, local products such as fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and beverages.NinosWhether seasonal or year-round, these markets provide an opportunity to purchase high-quality foods directly from the source. However, shoppers must keep food safety in mind to avoid foodborne illnesses.

Temperature Matters

Some farmers markets operate seasonally during warmer months, and the risk of foodborne illness increases with the temperature. When temperatures exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, perishable foods can become unsafe within just one hour.

Shoppers should look for vendors who store perishable items like raw meats and soft cheeses on ice, in coolers, or under refrigeration.

Bringing an insulated bag or cooler with ice, frozen gel packs, or frozen beverages can help keep purchases safe below 40 degrees Fahrenheit until you get home. It's wise to shop for perishable items last to minimize their exposure to warm temperatures.

Meat and Poultry

Safety is paramount when purchasing raw meat and poultry. These items must be kept cold to prevent bacteria from multiplying to dangerous levels.

Ensure that raw meat and poultry are stored properly by the vendor. Once purchased, place them in separate bags from ready-to-eat items like fruits and vegetables.

This prevents cross-contamination from leaking juices. After handling raw meat and poultry packages, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol.

Produce

Selecting fruits and vegetables requires attention to detail. Choose produce that is free from bruises or damage, as these areas can harbor bacteria.

While whole fruits and vegetables can be displayed without refrigeration, perishable items such as strawberries, lettuce, herbs, and mushrooms should be refrigerated as soon as you get home.

Pre-cut or peeled produce needs to be stored on ice or refrigerated at the market. Always rinse all produce thoroughly with running water before consumption.

Reusable Bags

Reusable bags are a popular and eco-friendly choice for shopping at farmer's markets. However, they can accumulate bacteria, dirt, and debris over time. To maintain their hygiene, wash these bags frequently with hot water and soap.

By following these tips, shoppers can enjoy their farmer's market experience while ensuring their food remains safe and healthy.
