Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Newark on Sunday night.
According to authorities, at approximately 8:10 p.m., Newark police officers were dispatched to the 800 block of South 16th Street on a report of shots fired.
Arriving officers observed the victim lying on the ground and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The victim, who has been identified as Mr. Ibn Abdul Walker, 18, of Newark was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:20 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.
The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Fennelly, who added that the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
